The DePoi Group, together with it's customers, it's staff and it's suppliers has built up a group of companies for whom continuity, quality, loyalty and dependability are the key principles.
Only those companies which put their knowledge and experience entirely at the disposal of their customers and which act in the customers interest have any chance of reaching the top in the highly specialised world of agricultural products. The DePoi Group has built up a special reputation as a result of it's close links with, on the one hand, the cultivation of fresh produce and, on the other, it's active investment and keen interest in customer requirements. Over recent years in the Adelaide Market, the produce trade has had to deal with the growing influence and power of the supermarket style of retailing, which is of course based on the changing needs of our consumers. For many products in many seasons, there has appeared to be an over supply of available product and producers have required more than ever to attain a competitive edge over their fellow competing producers so as to exact a profitable return. Whereas quality alone has been a sufficient competitive edge in the market system, other elements of the marketing mix must now be employed.
Our policy arises from our recognition that producers need to gain a continuing competitive edge so as to get access to this wider market and maintain profitability and from our recognition that the supermarket chains need assistance in creating their own competitive edge to protect market share and profitability.
The DePoi Group bases its business on the philosophy of quality and service, in the belief our customers are second to none.
We believe that each and every one of our customers' is entitled to receive the service and standard of produce that their type of business and target market require. Therefore, we make it a priority to be aware of our customers' changing needs at all times so that we can respond promptly.
The ability to compete profitably is not primarily a question of pricing. Our objective is to concentrate on the many other aspects, which create greater effectiveness in marketing. These include areas as diverse as the efficient receival and storage of stock, the monitoring of stock at the store level to the design of packaging and the implementation of promotional budgets.
We believe an all encompassing view as agents will enable returns to producers commensurate with the effort and cost involved in providing produce in the form and quality that the supermarket chains require. In other words, the competitive edge is a strategy for improved profitability.
To allow our pursuit of this plan, we have restricted the range of products in which we deal. We will endeavour to be 'market makers' in these products by attention to detail, planning, promotions and programming of distribution.
Continuity of supply is one of these factors, as by providing efficiency and reliability in both supply and quality, we equip the supermarket with the
competitive edge it requires and for which it is prepared to pay.
The greatest available cost saving is the avoidance of mismatched expectations of quality between buyer and producers. The buyer must have the confidence that the produce supplied will be that which is planned and programmed (and promoted) in advance, if it is not, the effectiveness and effort of planning is lost and no advantage over the 'spot' market is obtainable.
For some products in particular, available quality will vary season to season and according to weather. Within reasonable constraints, 'quality' is a comparative judgement rather than an absolute. Good communication and market intelligence will be paramount in assessing suitability of a particular crop in such circumstances.
However the buyer will be the arbiter in any case and it's up to ourselves and the producer to exhibit good judgement and thus establish through reliability this confidence that is a mutual requirement.
The supermarket chains are highly selective of individual producers, based on their perception of product quality and reliability. We believe that the future growth of the chains' market share preclude access to many producers of a low quality and or reliability and quite possibly volume. However, because they must provide the grower with incentive to supply, we believe a premium will continue to be made available to their supplying producers.
The DePoi Group will concentrate on drawing the benefits available from better effectiveness in marketing and distribution by planning, programming and product differentiation.
Year round we will do everything possible to fulfil the wishes of the final customer, the consumer. This calls for year round quality, healthy products, undamaged and in tune with current customer demands.
Above all, the speed with which the DePoi Group obtains these daily fresh products from it's suppliers, and deliverers them to the customer, can be regulated according to this customer demand. We can supply any product the customer requires, wherever it's grown, on one important condition: we will not supply any goods until we have convinced ourselves that they meet all the demands placed on them by our customer!
